The History of Your Bed

For centuries the bed has been one of the most important items of furniture in a household.

Natural Latex Pillow

Beds are a status symbol: the Tudor royals and noblemen showed off their wealth through their huge four-poster beds and elaborate drapes and hangings, and many people today covet a spacious and beautifully designed bed in their home.

Natural Latex Pillow

The difference in the quality and comfort of beds has always separated rich from poor and continues to do so. While some of us enjoy the luxury of fine Egyptian cotton sheets, others around the world still prepare for the night by rolling out a simple sleeping mat.

Beds in the ancient world

The earliest beds were little more than piles of straw or other natural materials to ease the discomfort of lying on a bare, cold floor. An important change occurred when beds were first raised off the ground to protect the sleeper from draughts, dirt, and pests.

More than 3,600 years ago, the Persians filled goatskins with water to create the first water beds. In ancient Egypt, beds were made from wood and reed matting, and the bed functioned as a place to eat and entertain socially as well as to sleep.

In Homer's Odyssey, the bed of Odysseus is described as being made of woven rope, while the ancient Romans had a variety of beds for different purposes. These included the lectus cubicularis, or chamber bed for sleeping, the lectus discubitorius, or table bed, on which up to three people would lie to eat, and the lectus funebris, on which the dead were carried to the pyre. In most ancient societies, however, only the rich would have enjoyed the luxury of sleeping in a bed.

Beds in the Middle Ages

In Saxon England, a bed typically consisted of a mattress on wooden boards, covered with quilts and fur rugs. In the later Saxon period, some beds were raised wooden platforms. Again, it was only the rich who slept in beds; everyone else spent the night on the floor huddled around the fire in the great hall. The 13th century saw the arrival of the canopy or tester, which was suspended by cords from beams above the bed. Curtains were hung on it to block out draughts and light. Gradually bed covers became more elaborate, often incorporating gold cloth and decorative fringes. In the early 14th century, feather beds imported from France became popular in English homes. In the wealthiest households a feather bed was placed onto the matted truss (mattress) of straw, with a layer of canvas in between.

The woollen blanket also appeared around this time. The great four-poster bed was first introduced in the 15th century, probably from Austria. These beds were typically enormous with huge intricately carved pillars up to 18 inches in diameter carrying the vast weight of the wooden panelled tester. Carvings on the bed included the family coat of arms, monsters, griffins, Cupids, and knights, and drapes and tapestries were heavily embroidered in splendid colours and exotic designs. When lords travelled between manors, they frequently took their beds with them. Portable beds were known as 'trussing' beds and the hangings were referred to as 'the portable chamber.' In 1600, the bed in a poor household would consist of a timber frame with rope or leather supports. The mattress was a bag of soft filling, usually straw or sometimes wool. However, a tradesman might have several feather beds in his house, often with an elaborately carved back and posts.

The origins of the modern bed

By the mid 18th century, a greater range of materials for bedding had become available. Quality linen or cotton was used for covers, while coconut fibre, cotton, wool and horsehair filled mattresses and pillows. By the late 19th century, iron and steel frames had largely replaced the traditional timber bed.

In 1873, Sir James Paget at St Bartholomew's Hospital first used a waterbed to treat and prevent pressure sores. The water-filled mattress allowed pressure to be evenly distributed over the body. By 1895 a few waterbeds were sold by Harrod's via mail order. But due to a lack of suitable materials, the waterbed did not gain widespread popularity until vinyl was developed in the 1960s.

In 1900, American William Lawrence Murphy invented the space-saving 'Murphy Bed', which folded up into a closet. 1929 saw the arrival of expensive latex rubber mattresses, and at around the same time pocket spring mattresses were introduced. These consisted of individual springs sewn into linked fabric bags.

The pocket sprung mattress is still sold worldwide today, though new technology has enabled alternatives to be developed such as the memory foam mattress, which moulds perfectly to the shape of your body and ensures a great night's sleep.

From an aesthetic perspective, beds made from natural materials such as pine have enjoyed a recent resurgence in popularity.

Beds and Mattresses of Europe in the 17th Century

The 17th century (or 1600s) have been referred to as the "the century of magnificent beds."

Natural Latex Pillow

France's Louis XIV had over 400 beds in his palaces, many of which were truly fantastic. Some had embroideries with pearls and silver or gold figures. The bed at Versailles had crimson velvet curtains and had "The Triumph of Venus" embroidered on it. So much gold was used that the velvet was barely visible.

Natural Latex Pillow

In the 1700s, feather pillows were first used as bed coverings in Germany, and France soon adopted this idea. However, in France they used much more variety on this theme than did the Germans.

In France, the "bed of justice" was held to denote the royal power even more than the throne. It was used by the the king to reclined when he attended parliament. Princes, on the other hand, sat in chairs, officials stood, and lesser officials knelt. Louis XI is credited with its first use, and the custom continued until the collapse of the monarchy. In the chambre de parade where the ceremonial bed was kept, certain people, namely ambassadors or lords, were welcomed in a more intimate fashion than the crowd of courtiers.

At Versailles, women would welcome friends in their beds both prior to and after childbirth, during times of mourning, and shortly after marriage. As a matter of fact, friends were received in the beds during any occasion that was considered deserving of congratulation or condolence. Soon this strange custom became more widespread, perhaps to avoid other more difficult and expensive ways of social etiquette.

Eco Friendly Green Latex Mattress - World's First Ever "Certified Organic Latex" Has Arrived

Consumers have been the driving force towards green in all areas and the bedding industry and more specifically latex mattress manufacturing has recently been touched. Latex Green is a highly regarded sleep products supplier. They have now received both the USDA and European authorities' approval for their extensive efforts in recent years which have now resulted in a "Certified Organic Latex" product for them.

Natural Latex Pillow

Latex Green and their distributor Latexco West/Sleep Comp West have the honor to bring the world's first Certified Organic Latex bedding components to the United States as the end result of several years working to attain this goal. Latex Green has taken remarkable steps over the past four years to achieve this highlight by undertaking very strenuous guidelines concerning the certifications of plantations they are linked to for their source of latex.

Natural Latex Pillow

Not a simple feat, the process involved proper site selection, completely free of pesticides and chemical fertilizers, examination of the water supply, soil type and condition of soil, even including consistent airflow so the crop was enhanced by maximum use of carbon dioxide. Some of the desireable attributes of the latex mattress that have caused the public to become such fans over the past 15 years are as follows:

Dust mite resistant Naturally hypoallergenic and anti-microbial Completely contours to full body giving total support needed especially to the shoulder and hip areas Can be purchased in an all natural or a blended latex to suit your firmness preference Resilient and returns to its natural form immediately Mattress can be made in several layers with different firmness so you can switch them around to suit your best sleeping comfort and additionally each layer can be made "duplex style" where each partner selects the firmness choice on their side of the mattress Never needs turning or flipping Longer lasting than conventional mattresses Sleeps cooler in summer and warmer in winter

The consumer reaction in the U. S. to the Latex Green accomplishment has been that they are quite pleased to see this product available and demand has initially exceeded supply. Latex Green has plans in place to address this so the phase-in will be smooth. Those plans include additional locations for their sources.

Certainly the concentrated additional steps in this totally green latex mattress process will have a cost and that cost will be reflected in mattress prices because it will be passed along from point to point in the chain from field to factory to retailer to customer. Only the future will tell to what degree consumers will choose green but they now have a choice to take it to the highest level with the purest of the pure "natural latex".

Aloe Vera Juice As a Natural Remedy for Heartburn

Many people who are afflicted by pain and burning in their chest and abdomen after eating would prefer not to take prescription medicines, and are instead looking for a natural remedy for heartburn. One such non-pharmaceutical treatment for heartburn and acid reflux is aloe vera juice. You may have heard that aloe can be used to treat burns, sunburn, psoriasis and other skin conditions, but you might not be aware of the fact that it has been used for centuries in Europe to soothe heartburn too. Have you heard of the miracles that aloe vera has brought about?

Natural Latex Pillow

Although the effects of aloe vera juice on heartburn have not been scientifically proven, it does make sense that this plant would help ease the discomfort that arises when stomach acid backs up into the esophagus and causes irritation. In fact, medical tests have shown that aloe can be beneficial to sufferers of ulcerative colitis, Crohn's Disease and other painful digestive ailments.

Natural Latex Pillow

If you want to try aloe as an all-natural heartburn treatment, drink a quarter of a cup of the juice 20 minutes before eating, and see if it reduces your usual acid indigestion symptoms. You can buy specially prepared aloe vera juice at health food outlets. If you prefer to take capsules rather than liquid juice, just follow the dosage directions on the bottle. As long as you make sure the product doesn't contain aloe latex, which is a strong laxative, you should find that aloe works well as a natural remedy for heartburn.

A Foam Mattress Pad is an Affordable Alternative to a New Mattress

Nothing is worse than going to bed needing to get a good night's sleep and then tossing and turning because of an uncomfortable, worn out old mattress. You wake up with aches and pains from not enough support and feeling as tired as when you went to bed. The best solution for this problem is a new mattress.

Natural Latex Pillow

If you cannot afford to go to this expense, then your other option is to purchase a foam mattress pad. The purpose of using a foam mattress pad is to cover the flaws in your old mattress so you can get more years of use from it. The mattress pad, or topper as they are sometimes called, can cover lumps and sags in the primary mattress making it much more comfortable.

Natural Latex Pillow

Before purchasing a foam mattress pad, let's discuss some of the fine points of the two most popular types, the latex and the memory foam. The latex pad can be made of synthetic or 100% natural latex. The 100% natural material is the best choice because it is hypoallergenic. A topper made of 100% natural latex reduces the occurrence of allergy attacks. It also protects the primary mattress from mold and dust mites. The latex topper features an open cell design that allows air to circulate and reduce the amount of humidity in the material. This promotes an unfriendly environment for the growth of mold that can cause health problems and dust mites that can burrow into the skin and result in a rash. It also is big on comfort and provides semi-firm support. The latex topper reduces the development of pressure points and improves the body's posture while sleeping.

A memory foam mattress pad is very thick and excellent at covering the uncomfortable spots of the old primary mattress. It is made from a special kind of foam that is sensitive to body temperature. Memory foam starts out firm, but as it is warmed by the person laying on it the foam mattress pad adjusts to the shape of the sleeper. Memory foam toppers are recommended for older people and those suffering from upper back pain because they are very firm and provide maximum support. Some people find memory foam toppers too firm to suit them. Research suggests memory foam mattress pads are more suitable for certain body types, such as someone with an athletic build.

When it comes to choosing between a latex or memory foam mattress pad, the choice is up to you. Only you know what feels comfortable to your body. Listing the advantages and disadvantages of the two types of foam mattress pads will allow you to compare them and help you decide which one is best for you.

Foam Mattress History and Buyers Guide

During the late 60's we all know that the youth of America, including myself, erupted with displeasure on how things were done. The Vietnam war fueled this fire. There was much unrest as to why we were involved in the first place. Yesterday I had a Vietnam war veteran in my showroom and I asked him if he even knew why he had fought? His answer was "they gave us a lot of reasons but none of them made any sense". I then asked him if he would like to know real reason. He immediately answered "YES".

Natural Latex Pillow

Here's the common answer you will find on wiki.answers.com -

Natural Latex Pillow

France controlled Vietnam up until WWII when Japan took it over. After WWII Japan was forced to give up the area. Vietnam began a strong Nationalist movement in the time that followed when France began to regain control of Vietnam. They fought up to where the line between North and South Vietnam used to exist. They later gave up after a bloody battle at Dienbenphu. Up until this point The US had merely been funding the war. The US was funding it for two reasons: one, to improve relations with France, and two, to stop the spread of communism. However after the French lost the US sent troops in (in smaller amounts at first) to keep North Vietnam from taking over South Vietnam thus making it communist. That's pretty much how it started.

As Paul Harvey would say " and now for the rest of the story". During the early 50's and all the way through the mid 70's, Sears was famous for their "rubber mattresses". They were comfortable, durable and very heavy. Why not, they were made of latex rubber. Another product made with latex rubber are tires. Vietnam has some of the best rubber tree plantations in the world and French companies like Michelin laid claim to them. At the time Vietnam was considered a French Territory. But when the Vietnam government tried to nationalize the rubber tree plantations the first country the French called for help was, but of course, the good ol US of A. They wanted us to protect their investment under the disguise of thwarting communism. Once we got involved the French pretty much ran for the hills and left us holding the bag. The rest as they say is history.

The war disrupted greatly the flow of latex into the U.S. and eventually latex mattresses completely disappeared from the American marketplace around 1975. It was about that time that waterbeds became the new rage. I remember traveling from furniture show to furniture show setting up our waterbeds in hopes of attracting new store buyers. At that time the polyfoams also started to get a foothold on the bedding market. The company I worked for put the two ideas together as one. Foam edges, water in the middle. It was called a hybrid because it was a waterbed that looked just like a regular spring mattress. These beds took over the specialty bedding market from the late 70's into the mid 80's.

We baby boomers just did not want to settle for the traditional rock hard mattresses that the doctors and chiropractors recommended. From the mid 80's came the "pillow top" mattress. New manufacturing techniques enabled us to make bigger, thicker mattresses. This became the newest rage plus the added bonus for manufacturers was they could now sell comfort, not durability. More frequent turnover was the name of the game. With this new found comfort came decreased durability. All that fluff will only hold up for a short period of time before it flattens out causing deep body impressions. We didn't seem to care because sleeping on a cloud was worth the price we had to pay every couple of years to change it out for new one.

Let's get back now to Vietnam. Natural rubber has a long history in Vietnam. The first plantation was founded in 1897, during the era of French colonialism. With the end of the Vietnam War, the Vietnamese government set out to once again establish Vietnam as a major exporter of Natural Rubber.

The industry was reinvigorated by a US$ 32 million loan from the World Bank in 1996 to improve rubber latex processing technology to international standards. Rubber tree plantations are located in the tropical South of the country. The total rubber tree plantation area in Vietnam is 360,000 hectares (900,000 acres) and the average annual output of Natural Rubber is 250,000 metric tons. Vietnam's output of Natural Rubber is growing at a rate 15% per year as additional hectares are planted and young trees reach maturity and are put into rubber latex production.

These developments helped to bring back latex mattresses to the U.S. marketplace. Latex International, latexfoam.com, was the first to bring back these wonderful mattresses. I noticed an ad in our industry publication and immediately called to get my first sample. Since 1997 my company, Arizona Premium Mattress Co., has specialized in these types of mattresses with no regrets.

About this same time another foam mattress started to make it's mark in the specialty bedding.

Memory foam was developed as a space age material. NASA developed the first generation of memory foam in the 1970s. Memory foam had characteristics of both liquid and solid. You could put your hand into the surface of the substance, and when you released you could see your handprint in the material for a short time as the substance returned its original flat state. Seeing the characteristics of this new substance to both support and cushion, NASA thought it would be a good idea to use it in the space shuttle, as a way to reduce the G-force impact on astronauts' bodies during take-off.

NASA eventually abandoned it after realizing it became too brittle due to the aging process. This is something you all need to consider when looking into any kind of poly-foam mattress.

A Swedish company that had worked with NASA on the project continued playing around with the urethane substance and, after ten years of research, produced a version that supposedly wouldn't become brittle over time. It was a spongy plastic kind of like gelatin, whose open cells could collapse under pressure, force the air pockets to other cells, and then return to form. The second generation of memory foam had now been developed.

Tempur-Pedic® originally introduced this "memory foam" to the world and started selling the material to hospitals for mattress overlays to help patients who suffered from chronic bed sores. Patients reported that these overlays had greatly reduced pressure points and soreness on joints. Based on their success within the medical field, Tempur-Pedic® introduced memory foam to the world in the early 1990s. Initially the prices they charged were off the scale but with increased competition they were forced to bring them back to reality. As of today, memory foam now costs more than the comparable latex foam. After all, memory foam is an oil-based derivative of polyurethane. For more information on what memory foam customers are saying go to chem-tox.com/guest/guestbook.html Warning - you may be shocked at what you read.

Now for what's happening today

Is the United States shifting it's buying habits back to the basics? Years ago folks did not have to worry about what potentially harmful chemicals were inside their mattresses. Today, that's not true any more. With the passage of federal law CFR 1633 manufacturers are now required to incorporate flame retardant chemicals that may or may not be healthy for consumers. As time passes I'm sure the truth will come out but this law should never have happened in the first place.

The main backers of this law were of course the major mattress manufacturers commonly referred to in my industry as the 4 s's. They ranted and raved how this would save so many lives, especially those who smoked in bed. I say bulls-. This law had one clear intention, to make it very difficult on the mom and pop mattress shops to keep their doors open. Guess what America, they succeeded.

I have so many friends in this industry and most are like myself, a family owned company who is now struggling to keep it's very doors open. In a downturn economy with cost of goods soaring, it's becoming near impossible to turn a profit. Add to it the burden of having to prototype and burn each mattress model at a cost of over 0 ea. plus two confirmation burns equaling over 00 in testing fees. Most companies offer at least 10 different models so do the math. That's an average cost of ,000 for each mom and pop just to comply with the new law and that does not even include the cost of manufacturing each bed for burning or transportation of all those mattresses. The overall costs can equal twice that amount.

Is the real intention of this new law becoming clear now? I just found out the one of the largest fire barrier manufactures has just closed it's doors. Does that mean that I now have to start all over again? Retest everything since I was using their barriers in my specs? I sincerely hope not or like so many others I might have to re-think if this business is really worth it..

The desire to have a "green" or "organic" mattress is increasing to the point that we are overwhelmed with calls for such an item. We do offer such an item but as I said we are still required to put a fire barrier around our all natural latex mattresses. There is a loophole in this new law and that is with a doctor or chiropractors prescription for a non fire retardant mattress. We are encouraging all of our mattress customers to seek out such a prescription and even have a chiropractor working with us to provide such relief from governmental regulations. Who wants to be told they have to sleep on a chemically treated mattress anyway?

Bottom line is there is a solution to this problem plaguing my industry. We need to use the loopholes just like the major companies do all the time. It's time to fight back otherwise you can kiss you mom and pop shops goodbye forever and be bound to whims of major corporations. By the way, did anyone notice the price of gas lately?

FOAM MATTRESS BUYERS GUIDE

- Talalay latex is the best whether all natural or blend.

- Watch out for pillow tops! I will never understand why a manufacturer would compromise the integrity of latex or memory foam by layering materials of much lower quality on top. This will cause body impressions. Not in the latex or memory foam itself, but in the pillow top.

- Choose firmness carefully. Many retailers will only offer one firmness. The heavier you are, the firmer you need and visa versa. We offer 4 firmness levels to choose from.

- Foam mattresses do not need to be more than 10″ thick. Anything more is over-kill and unnecessary materials designed for aesthetics, not functionality. Besides, it adds more weight to an already extremely heavy mattress.

- Demand to know what's inside. Many manufacturers will put poly-foam and other fillers than can be toxic inside the mattress.

- The more expensive the better, right? Wrong. Many latex mattresses that are just now approaching 40 years in service are finally being replaced. Their simple design was what gave them their durability. If someone tries to sell you a 12″ latex mattress ask "how much of that is actual latex"? Most mattress salespersons probably don't even know, or they will just guess. It is important to have as little other materials on top of the latex as possible. This will give your mattress increased durability. This holds true for memory foam also.

- Buy from someone who knows foam. Terminology, ILD's, density, processes, etc. This way you know your dealing with someone can help you determine what's best for your individual sleeping style.

- Shop price. Online will always get you the best deal. You can save hundreds if not thousands by judiciously comparing prices online. If you do buy online, just make sure the company has a money back guarantee and trial period. Foam mattresses may not be for you. The less middlemen between you and the factory, the better the price.

- Don't buy memory foam! Latex is simply a better material, can be all natural (be sure to ask), and with the high price of oil IT's CHEAPER!

- Compare by shopping locally first and get an idea of what firmness, style you like. Take notes on pricing, etc. Then compare online. The savings can be significant.
